The Texas Mentorship Training (TMT) is for any school system looking to bolster teacher retention and effectiveness in order to increase student outcomes. School systems participating in the Preparing and Retaining Educators through Partnership (PREP) Mentorship Program will receive PREP Allotment funding to engage in Mentoring Educator Training and District & Campus Leader Design Sessions of TMT. Any PREP Preservice Program Allotment (Residency, Traditional, Alternative) recipient will also have their host teachers, cooperating teachers, and intern mentor teachers engage in Mentoring Educator Training of TMT.

Mentoring Educator Training: For mentors, cooperating teachers, and host teachers supporting pre- and early-service teachers.

District and Campus Leader Design Sessions: For campus and district leaders to sustain mentorship programs.

Yes, the Texas Mentorship Training is designed to provide comprehensive mentorship training and supports to school systems via its Pathways. PREP Mentorship Program mentor teachers and relevant district and campus staff who support or supervise beginning teachers will participate in Mentoring Educator training. District and campus leaders who support or supervise beginning teachers or are integral to the design of a strong mentorship program may participate in District & Campus Leader Design Sessions. TEA guidance is that all participating PREP Mentorship districts should include at least one campus representative (highly encouraged to have two or more) from each participating PREP Mentorship campus who has agency over the campus’s mentorship work. All design team members should plan to attend all four design sessions.​ District & Campus Leader Design Sessions are optional for school systems who are not participating in PREP Mentorship.

School systems who are participating in TMT as a part of PREP Mentorship Program via LASO 4 began TMT in Spring 2026. Any school systems who participate in PREP Mentorship or a PREP Preservice Program (Residency, Traditional, Alternative) via LASO 5 will begin working with their TMT Provider in Spring 2027.

The TMT is intended to be delivered in-person through an approved training provider. Please contact an approved training provide via the Training Providers page for more information.

TMT Providers can request approval from TEA to offer training virtually (synchronously) if travel to the ESC would require overnight accommodation for school system participants OR if weather conditions do not allow safe travel or if weather conditions cause a session to be cancelled. 

The PREP Mentorship Program provides funding through which participating school systems implement a mentoring program that increases beginning teacher retention and effectiveness, ultimately leading to increased student outcomes through strong mentorship. As part of the PREP Mentorship Program, both mentor teachers and district and campus leaders will engage in high-quality, research-based mentorship training via the Texas Mentorship Training (TMT).

Through participation in TMT, mentor teachers will build upon their leadership skills to expand their knowledge and expertise to support effective classroom practices and provide support to beginning teachers in their first and second years. Additionally, appropriate district and campus leaders will also engage in mentorship program design and implementation sessions to help them develop or refine mentoring programs.

Through PREP Mentorship Program, school systems will engage in the Texas Mentorship Training (TMT) via an approved Texas Mentorship Training provider, who provides high-quality, research-based training to mentor teachers and any appropriate district and campus employees who work with or supervise classroom teachers who have less than two years of teaching experience.

Mentor teachers - for classroom teachers who have less than two years of teaching experience, a teacher who, to the extent practicable, teaches in the same school, subject, and/or grade level of the beginning teachers and completes an agency adopted mentor teacher training program, has at least three years of teaching experience and demonstrates instructional and leadership skills under TEC, §21.458 and §21.907.

District & campus leaders - any appropriate district and campus employees who work with the classroom teacher or supervise the classroom teacher under TEC, §21.458. TEA guidance is that all participating PREP Mentorship districts should include at least one campus representative (highly encouraged to have two or more) from each participating PREP Mentorship campus who has agency over the campus’s mentorship work. All design team members should plan to attend all four design sessions.​ District & Campus Leader Design Sessions are optional for school systems who are not participating in PREP Mentorship.
